The great transition phase under the rule of Queen Victoria set the face of England. From economic to Social life, from Industry to Literature, the Victorian age marked the beginning of the ‘English’ life that we identify with England today. |
LIFESTYLE IN VICTORIAN AGE:
CLASS DISTINCTION
A major social force of the times, class was a major determinant in the kind of lifestyle one adopted. Financial status was the chief demarcation. There was a clear distinction between upper, middle and lower classes. Overlapping was rare and took place mostly between the upper and the middle classes.
Victorian lifestyle is identified mostly with the living standards and etiquettes of the rich, comprising of the Royals, the Nobility, Church or any status in the British Order of Honor.
DAILY LIFESTYLE
Fashion gained prominence. Every occasion from a simple activity like going out for a walk to mourning had a dress code. Anyone dressing out of the set norms was considered derogatory for the standards of the society.
Although marked by very high living standards, Victorian lifestyle was epitomized by conservatism. Society was rigid, and women were bound by social norms. From what to wear, whom to talk to and even which places to visit, there were guidelines for women everywhere. Anyone going beyond these rules would face utmost social ostracism.
Social status also depended upon the kind of people one mixed with. ‘Gentlemen’ took great care in maintaining their social standards. Their gentlemanly status depended upon how they behaved with a lady, the topics of their conversation, the social circles they moved in and even the status of a person they greeted.
Gossiping was a major preoccupation. People took great care in maintaining the set standards. A little here and there would turn them into an object of ridicule.
LIFE IN THE LOWER ECHOLONS
For the middle class, main aim was to move up the social scale. This could be achieved by mixing with people of the higher societies, acquiring greater wealth and applying the upper class living standards in their lives.
Next in the strata came the servants of upper class people. They followed norms and regulations while serving their lords. But among them made a social grouping where they enjoyed themselves.
The poor didn’t have anything to be called a lifestyle when their soul ambition in life was survival. They didn’t follow any living standards as such and were looked down upon by the higher classes.
