A PROUD CIVILISATION
Being the cradle of civilization in Europe, the Greeks form a unique race of proud, easy going, and friendly people. Greek life is simple, rich and universal. Lifestyle is quite similar to that followed in most part of Europe. However, there are some unique facts. Greeks more than any other nationality are fiercely proud of their nation. In spite of a troubled past marked by wars, political tension and invasions, the Greek people have maintained their faith and pride in their gorgeous country with a glorious history. |
Life in Greece is relaxed. There is no rush to work as is seen in other European cities. People are easy going, and enjoy their leisurely hours. Greeks like taking their dinner late. They stretch the dining time well past twelve, enjoying their drinks till about two or three at night.
A TAMED LIFESTYLE
Family is important for the Greeks. Their idea of socializing revolves around cozy get-togethers with friends and family. Life at home centers round the womenfolk. They are the ones who take care of the household while men stay out in bars, and socialize. Another unique characteristic is that unlike other western cultures the male members of the family stay at home until married. Religion is another crucial factor in Greek lifestyle. During troubled times the Greek Orthodox Church helped in maintaining their faith and self belief.
Greeks are loud and communicative in their behavior. Their conversations aren’t as polite and demeanor as that of the say French or English. Greeks love fashion and have a unique sense of style and dressing. When it comes to vacationing, August is the official month. People flood the beaches, taverns and motels. But strangely they stay within their territory. Perhaps effected by their nationalism Greeks cannot think of a better holiday spot outside their beautiful boundaries.
.When it comes to eating out Greeks love their traditional food, given an option they will prefer a good old taverna to any popular food chain. A cup of hot steaming coffee is enough for breakfast. The young people however enjoy their frappe more. Perhaps the biggest smokers in Europe, Greeks spend the most behind cigarettes.
Singing and dancing is an integral part of Greek social life. Rebetika an ancient form of singing is still popular among the old and the young.
Above all the Greeks perform their best as hosts. An invitation to lunch, dinner or an overnight stay is quite normal. Greeks love showing off their proud possessions, their culture and heritage. One should learn to respect that.
