Being a part of the biggest and grandest Empire of all times, the Romans led a lavish and sumptuous lifestyle. Every detail of day to day life of the Romans was larger than life. The way, in which the houses were built, dresses designed and draped and elaborate cuisines laid, spoke for the great aesthetic taste of the Romans.
The Romans over the age embraced several different cultures, which melted down into a supreme lifestyle, timeless in appeal. However, according to various social, economic and ethnic strata, lifestyle varied |
The Romans believed in socializing and entertainment. Numerous festivals, holidays and games marked the yearly Roman calendar. The citizens worked only about five to six hours a day; the rest of the day was devoted to leisurely activities. The famous gladiator fights were the most popular sports. Chariot races were also held in front of the imperial palace.
The social status of a roman citizen was epitomized by his attire. The pattern or design of a dress distinguished an upper class citizen from a lower one. The women however didn’t have any such distinction. The only demarcation was between a married and single woman. The married women in addition to the normal dress wore a stole.
Romans also set trends in hairstyling. In general the men wore short and smart hair cuts but sometimes also styled up their hair in curls. The same goes for women also. Women indulged a lot in cosmetics and accessories too.
Another symbol of social status was the eating habits of the Romans. The higher the status of a citizen the more he spent on food. The basic diet of the Romans included wheat, olive and wine. Innovations were made according to class. The cuisines ranged from a simple bread and wine meal to a several course one.
Given their legendary way of living, the Romans laid the rules for a luxurious lifestyle, the basics of which are still being followed across the world!
