BRIEF HISTORY
The Amish community belongs to the lineage of Anabaptists, who later came to be known as Mennonites, after Menno Simons, the Dutch Anabaptist leader. The Amish community in present day is settled in parts of USA, Canada and Ontario. |
Adherence to simplicity is what underlines Amish lifestyle. Those belonging to the Amish community have to hold fast to certain guidelines that even sets lifestyle rules for them. The basic aim of Amish lifestyle is to live a life sans any such facility that may lead to vanity and inequality. This is visible mostly in the use of technology. It might differ from community to community but Amish people try to make minimal use of technology. In some community even staple facilities like electricity, telecommunication is prohibited; while in some new age ones people have accepted computers, cell phones and automobiles.
DAY TO DAY LIFESTYLE
Amish people generally belong to large families. They are a closed community as marriages outside the community are strictly prohibited. Those marrying outside are shunned from the community for life.
Social life is almost inexistent. What we identify today as socializing is forbidden from the Ordnung or the Amish guidelines. Public interaction is simple and limited.
Their faith and beliefs are reflected in their dressing as well. Humbleness and detachment from the materialist world marks their attire. Amish people make their own clothing, the dresses are sans any kind of fancy designs and the fabric is generally dark in color.
Amish people generally keep within their communities and refrain from meeting people from the outside world. This is mainly a measure against enticement and sin.
However the Amish baptism rules permit a young member to try life outside the community. They are given complete freedom in choosing the life they want to follow. However, most of them return to the community, which speaks largely for the Amish virtues.
