Laos, the capital of Vietnam has undergone considerable development under impact of globalization but western cultural attributes have not been able to make much of an impact on this society. |
LIFESTYLE OF VIETNAMESE PEOPLE
Family lies at the center of all social events in Vietnam. Large families with 3-4 generation of people, residing together in a single house is very common. Often the families are so large that it is not possible to accommodate all. In that case people take up houses in vicinity, in neighboring villages or towns. Vietnamese people try not to settle too far from families in spite of economic needs. Worshipping the family ancestral lineage is custom here. Every family places their ancestral altar at the central part of the house. Names of ancestors of up to 5-6 generations are written there and worshipped regularly for the well- being of the family. Socializing revolves around local festivals and family occasions like marriage or mourning.
Religion plays an important role in the lifestyle of Vietnamese people. Mahayana Buddhism, Confucianism, Taoism and, Christianity are the dominant religions. Among them, Confucianism has the biggest impact on people’s lifestyle and daily conduct. Impact is seen mostly in strong family ties and modesty of Vietnamese people. Friendship is highly valued in Vietnamese society. Guests and neighbors are given greater importance over family and relatives in terms of hospitality. Vietnamese are very dignified people. They prefer not to take help in crisis as this hurts their sense of self- respect.
Intrusion of modernity has taken place in a very limited way in Vietnamese society. Most visible in basic attributes like dressing, eating and other amenities. Other than that lifestyle in Vietnam remains traditional.
