After becoming an independent nation in 1991, Ukraine underwent major upheavals in its socio-economic condition. This directly effected people’s lifestyle. Living conditions today are an absolute contrast to that in the past. Ukraine enjoyed the status of being the second best country in Soviet Union after Russia in terms of lifestyle. However, owing to economic difficulties and employment problems Ukrainians had to opt for a simple lifestyle. They now spend almost half of their income on food. |
Life in Ukraine
A primarily agrarian society, Ukraine during its heydays had developed many urban centers with a thriving socio- cultural scene. Kiev, the capital of Ukraine is also the cultural hub of the country. Many theaters holding concerts, operas and ballets, showcasing Ukrainian history and cultural heritage, are a regular site here. However, the popularity of these shows in recent years has dropped considerably. A sizeable portion of the population belongs to the low income group who cannot afford these lavish shows.
Food habits of Ukrainians are simple and rustic. Their main meal consists of Rye bread, Borsch (a type of beet soup), potatoes and pork meat in the form of sausages and smoked bacons.
Cultural scene in Ukraine
Ukraine’s cultural heritage bears a close demarcation of its Byzantine past. An amalgamation of western and eastern cultural attributes is found here, as Ukraine shares its boundaries with Europe and Asia. Folklore is another distinctive part of Ukrainian culture. Being well- crafted and diverse, the folklores added an exclusive touch to Ukrainian culture. During the soviet regime the government offered subsidies to cultural events, in view of its being a useful instrument for promoting communist agenda. Post independence, the artists tried to revive the originality but because of no subsidies, the task became difficult. People are now opting for popular western cultures more than the expensive operas. Rock concerts are being held frequently in the cities.
