Writing about Russian lifestyle always means a direct comparison with western lifestyle or more specifically American lifestyle. This is the case with every part of the world, but is most striking in case of Russia because of its historical antagonism with the West. Once a social taboo, western habits and trends is being increasingly incorporated in the lifestyle of modern Russians. However, the level of incorporation is highly limited given the economic status of the country. |
Western culture and Russian lifestyle
Introduction of Mc Donald’s, Coke, Mobile Phones etc, happened gradually. All these brands however, underwent modifications to find greater acceptance among Russians. For example, Coke in Russia tastes entirely different from that in other countries. These little changes however, could not fade the western tag attached to them. Also, in recent years Russia has seen the growth of pub/club culture in the country.
However, essential components of daily living that demarcates a lifestyle as western is not yet ‘in’ in Russia. For instance, an average American home will have almost all the modern lifestyle appliances ranging from DVD players to exercise machines to complete kitchen appliances. Russians spend half of their salary on food and the rest on holidays, that include food, alcohol and modes of entertainment.
Distinctiveness and peculiarities
There are certain other features whic
h are exclusively Russian. Most unique of them all is the Russian definition of privacy. What is meant by personal space and privacy in western culture does not apply in Russia. For example, doors in a house are rarely used, even in the case of bathrooms, where doors are totally absent. People after marriage generally move out of parental home, but in case of Russia they stay on. Bedrooms are often shared and the kitchens are almost as important as bedrooms or living rooms. Parties or family dinners are hosted in the kitchen itself where a big folding table is placed.
In spite of a comparatively simpler lifestyle, Russians have their own tastes and choices. For example, they love displaying intricately designed carpets and rugs on their living room walls and, keeping big and ornate furniture. Women take great pride in their jewelry, bone china and fur coats. Being a knowledgeable population most Russian houses have a mini library storing books on several subjects.
