A DIVIDED CULTURE
A country and people divided in lifestyle and cultural sustenance is what sums up for a glorious nation called Peru. Home to some of the oldest and mysterious civilizations of the world (the Incas, Machu Picchu), and some of the most well kept national parks and above all the panoptical Andes sierra, Peru contains perhaps the highest number of world heritage sites( declared by UNESCO) of the world. Another unique feature of this beautiful country is the biological diversity; desiccated deserts, coastlines, plains and the Andes range. |
Society in Peru is divided along cultural lines. The people living on the Andes are the original inhabitants of Peru, while in other parts of the country you will find the ‘mestizo’ community, formed as a result of intermixing between the American Indians and the Europeans. This cultural distinction sets the demarcation between lifestyle followed in the highlands and that in the plains which house the major cities and the capital Lima.
Life in Lima is similar to any urban city. People here have changed their lifestyle according to time, given a history of immigration from Europe, Africa, China and Japan. Although not as upgraded as the major capitals of the world, Peru is in the process of development and the rate is highest in the cities and towns situated below the Andes. Life on the Andes range is however a complete contrast. People living here have refused to give in to change. They still adhere to centuries old customs and traditions and are in many ways backward when compared to the lifestyle of the cities.
In spite of these cultural distinctions and economic limitations Peruvians are popular across the world for their sweet nature and easy going attitude towards life. In spite of many political and social upheavals that have been haunting this beautiful country, Peruvians have always lived above. Living amidst economic constraints, global challenges and a constant struggle with tradition people of Peru have created a happy niche for themselves.
