Social customs and tradition in Italy in present times is largely associated with festivities surrounding Christmas, Easter and weddings. This is because of the decreasing influence of the Church on daily life of Italians. Traditional way of life has changed much since the post World War II years. People have become more open to other western cultures and habits. This has resulted in a lot of changes in the daily norms of Italians. |
DAILY LIFE AND ITALIAN CUSTOMS/TRADITIONS
A friendly attitude, tolerance and eagerness to know and accept foreign people, cultures and behaviors are common. However, there are a few rudimentary customs that are still maintained. Eating, dining habits, including the ‘happy hours’ after work, which is a revival of an old custom of aperitivo , which started at the end of Second World War. In order to keep an agonizing past behind, Italians in the mid 20th century revived the practice of enjoying life. This custom of meeting at bars or cafeterias with friends over a drink lost popularity in the subsequent years. However, the present generation of Italians, in an attempt to keep up with the rest of the world has restarted this trend.
Apart from that Italian traditions are best kept in the detailed dining sessions. The mid day working hours revolve around a laid-back and elaborate lunch. Same goes for occasional parties and gatherings that are still preferred in somebody’s house rather than in hotel or restaurants. It’s the best opportunity to show off their culinary heritage and skills. Owing to a gastronomic tradition coming from Etruscans, Greeks and Saracens, Italy till today proudly exhibits its carte du jour to outsiders.
However, if one wants to get the real feel of Italian customs and traditions then must go for either an Italian wedding or be present at the Vatican on Easter day, or absorb the festivities surrounding Christmas. These are the times when one gets a picture of the exclusivity of Italy. There are certain other fetes exclusive to different regions of Italy. For example, a foot ball match in Florence in a special costume that dates back to 16th Century, the Venice carnival better known as the Regatta or the historic horse race, ‘Corsa Del Palio’ in Siena. These events equally celebrate the unique customs and traditions of Italy.
