Italian Food Lifestyle
: Pastas, Pizzas and Gelatos- a general idea of Italian cuisine, speaks nothing for an entire culture of food. Know more about the EATING HABITS of the gastronomic capital of the world.
A SEVEN COURSE AFFAIR

Unlike the English an Italian skips breakfast for just a cup of caffé in the morning. To be followed by elaborate lunch and dinners. A traditional Italian lunch/dinner would consist of pasta, followed by a main course of meat or fish. However an elaborate Italian lunch/dinner is laid out in the following way:

  • Antipasti or starters. Cheese, olives, artichokes, cold meat, bread toppings etc.
  • Primo or the second course, Pasta: In the north risotto (rice cooked in meat or vegetable stock) is popular. As you go down south, sauces will differ from cream to tomato- based ones. Often soup or minestra goes in place of pasta as the first course.
  • Secondo or the second course, the main course: Meat or fish served in grilled, baked or smoked forms and dressed with different kinds of herbs like rosemary.
  • Contorno or the side dish consisting of salads and vegetables is served along or after the main course.
  • Dolce or dessert comes in tempting varieties. The most well known and commonly served is the good old tiramitsu.
  • A cup of hot and strong cappuccino or caffé at the end is a must.
  • Finishing off the meal is liquor better known as ammazzacafé or coffee killer, includes varieties like grappa, amaro, limoncello.

  • Do not forget however the good old WINE which has to be served with each and every meal. A Pinot Grigio or Chianti perfectly complements a well served meal.

OLIVE OIL: The best producers of olive oil in the world, you cannot think of Italian cooking sans olive oil.

CHEESE: Mozzarella, Parmigiano Reggiano, Pecorino or the simple yet delectable Ricotta is among the most popular varieties.

THE GOOD OL’ PIZZA: A food culture in itself pizza has got an entirely different appearance in the country of its origin. Forget the chicken tikka or extra cheese hybrids. Pizza Margherita, Pizza al Prosciutto, Pizza Prosciutto e Funghi, La Napoletana are some of the authentic pizza toppings from Italy.

GELATO: Anyone who has tasted Italian gelato will blindly accept it as the best ice cream he/she has ever had. Owing to its traditional hand churned preparation gelato’s rich creamy texture and taste is simply an unforgettable one.

A NOTE ON ITALIAN EATING HABITS

Eating times are an opportunity to interact or get into quality conversations. There are many things one can learn from Italy when it comes to food. There are more than just cuisines to this gastronomic capital of the world.
