Indian Lifestyle
The buzz word for Indian lifestyle today is consumerism. Market sets lifestyle trends and people follow it blithely. Given the age old Indian virtues of tolerance and adoption, which has resulted in this multifarious culture, the country has become a melting pot. Anything and everything that comes from any part of the world (due to globalization) is considered acceptable if not in totality. People in India today live a life of contradictory values and ideals.
What does lifestyle stands for modern day Indians?
If you ask this question to a batch of people coming from different background, economic status and region, you will get answers that give an ambiguous nature to the term lifestyle. The answers will depend a lot on their family background, the nature of their work or education and peer group.

Lifestyle for urban Indians is about living among changing trends. This idea mainly comes from the media which has become a transmitter for trend setters.

If you move to semi urban areas or small townships you will get an impression that people are still “behind”, compared to lifestyle in the metros.

In a rural or tribal area, you will find a way of life about half a century old where the term lifestyle doesn’t hold any ground. Life is mainly about surviving everyday, extras are restricted to simple mediums of entertainment that comes from the local fairs, bioscopes and may be a television with 1 or 2 channels in the house of a comparatively well to do villager.

The Unending desire for a ‘better life’!
A major portion of the Indian population today is below the age of thirty five. In urban areas income levels have been rising consistently which automatically increases consumption levels. People strive towards an unending quest for that perfect life which has the highest living standards and satisfactory levels. But as Indians move up the scales of society and class; the paragon becomes a mirage.

This illusionary existence is the lift on which the huge consumption market is surviving. Indians have become perhaps the most influential buyers of the world.

Lifestyle: a conflict between tradition and desires.
Indian society amidst this latch less development of modernity has been trying hard to maintain its control over the society. A youngster includes in his lifestyle every possible amenity that makes him popular in his peer group, while depending on his parents for every means of livelihood. People struggle to maintain their identity amidst peer pressure and middle class conservatism. A constant surveillance on every individual is maintained along with changing ‘limits’.

Amidst a highly mobile lifestyle people hold on to what is and what is not known across the world as Indian culture. Owing to a lifestyle of stress and pressure, people look back to age old traditions and try to make them appear in vogue.
