Traditionally, the position of women in China, Japan, Korea and Mongolia was rather mediocre and pathetic. Being, a patriarchal society a male child was preferred to a female. Not many women were given the privilege to study and avail higher education. In family matters, problems or while taking decision on marriages, women never had a say. Majority rights were restricted to the men. Since few decades, the betterment of Asian women lifestyle is largely promoted by the government. Today, Asian women are offered almost equal opportunities and rights to secure their future and take care of their family independently.

Women in Southern Asia are further exploited and subjugated. Discriminations on the grounds of education, work, health, power and treatment are largely prevalent in countries like India, Bangladesh and Pakistan. Primarily it is thought that the responsibility of women is to look after the well-being of their families without getting involved in the family problems or matters. Lack of education and knowledge of the outer world have always barricaded the development of women.
However, after numerous revolutions and changes in the constitutional laws the position of women has risen. By bringing about equality between men and women, education prospects, job opportunities and economic security the government has been attempting to improve women’s social status.
An overview on Southeast Asia
Twentieth century has seen the development of the Southeast Asian women lifestyle. In the beginning, due to the Vietnam War and the inflow of tourists, women were largely victims of prostitution and oppressed on the grounds of race, class and gender. Women willingly have taken up prostitution in order to serve their basic needs and support their family. Gender and education inequality also prevails in Thailand, Philippines and Malaysia. Lately, the respective governments, through new policies, are trying to elevate the position of Southeastern women and strike a balance between the two genders.
Today, with the coming of urbanization, industrialization and economic boom, the Asian women’s lifestyle is reaching a respectable platform.
