Food, food habits, and food culture everything gets an entirely different meaning in America. There is no distinct cuisine which you can call American. The hamburgers and fried chicken might hold a point, but that is nothing compared to the variety offered by other cultures. For a dominating working-class population food is only a source of sustenance. As you rise up the social scale you will find people experimenting, studying and cultivating knowledge about food (as they have more time to spare). The discussion will however be on the cuisine of some other country |
For Americans (on a daily basis) quick availability of food is important and not the artistic or culinary skills. The lunch or dinner they will have has to be1) ready to eat, 2) cheap, and 3) hygienic. The genre of ‘fast food’ is an outcome of this. If you are from France, Italy or Spain the above mentioned specifications will annoy you. But that is what food is in American lifestyle.
Dining out is a major lifestyle statement in American society. On an average, most Americans believe eating out more than once a week is an absolute must. This is also because of the lack of interest in home cooking. People in order to keep up with friends and family also flock restaurants.
In spite of this discernible attitude towards eating America is perhaps the only country which deals with highest number of food related issues. Be it the numerous cookery shows, competitions or debate on health issues, Americans grab any news that is on food. They have in a way, hijacked certain dishes or items from different countries. The Italian pizza, Chicken tikka (Indian food founded in America) or Mexican nachos are among them. They have made such alterations that these food items have got an unofficial patent of being ‘American’.
Their constant experimentation with food has lead to an increase in dietary habits and food ingredients. One of the major reasons of this is the falling rate of home cooking. Most Americans find cooking a stressful activity. In spite of being the biggest buyers of state of the art kitchen appliances and cookware, cooking is hardly done at home. People dread the preparation and then cleaning of the kitchen after meals. However, Americans still have a lot of respect for home cooked food. For them it means good times with family and happiness. Many Americans today have broken trends and started cooking at home for the love of old values and culture.
